your elbow to your wrist bent in the shape of the head of the woodpecker. They drill some remarkable holes in trees for nesting. They find carpenter ants in ash trees and displace a large amount of bark finding and eating them. The trees don't die but almost seem to benefit from the ant removal. When they are pecking on a tree you know it is not an ordinary woodpecker. Our house now has cement siding so the downy woodpeckers will need to find their own wood to create their nests. Nature is so fun whether is is at Nancy's state park, Eleanor's Central Park, my piece of rural Indiana, Afke's pond in Botswana, or someone's backyard feeder!! We love it all!! John
